IPCC Working Group III contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report: Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change was released

04 Apr 2022

The IPCC Working Group III contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report: Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change was released on 4 Apr 2022. 278 authors from 65 countries assessed climate change mitigation progress and pledges, and examines the sources of global emissions. It also explains developments in emission reduction and mitigation efforts, assessing the impact of national climate pledges in relation to long-term emissions goals.

The report highlights several new components. One of them is exploring both the “demand” and “supply" side of Climate Change, introducing the social aspects of mitigation, exploring what drives consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and what produces the emissions. It also explores mitigation options that cut across sectors including carbon dioxide removal techniques. The report also describes how a well-established innovation system at national levels, guided by well-designed policies, can contribute to mitigation, adaptation and achieving the sustainable development goals while avoiding undesired consequences.

Although the rate of growth of the average annual global Greenhouse Gas Emissions has slowed in 2010-2019, limiting Global Warming 1.5°C is beyond reach without immediate and deep emissions reductions across all sectors. Act now!
