From STEM To STEAM

Now more than ever, Tech For Good and Capital For Good are quintessential in making an impact. As we move into industry 4.0, we must create an inclusive digital future, not just focus on new technologies, but also repurpose old technologies to help the less fortunate and close the digital gap.

On our third episode of GoImpact Chats, we are excited to have Sally Eaves, CEO and Founder of Aspirational Futures, a Professor in Emergent Technologies and a leading influencer in the Tech For Good space. In our podcast, she demonstrated the power of education, technology, and collaboration in making a sustainable social impact.

Inclusion At An Early Age

Sally worked on a project in India, targeting children with literacy difficulties. It is common that parents in India have low reading skills, which makes it difficult for children to receive an education at home. The project repurposed older phone technology that would have otherwise been thrown away, to help the children to learn to read.

Another example is StorySign, a mobile application that enables children with deafness to learn sign language and have access to books. Powered by AI, it scans text from children’s books. Then an avatar will retell the story through sign language, making it engaging and easy for children to learn.

Pushing Traditional Education

Aspirational Futures is a foundation built to push education beyond traditional means. The goal is to bring access to frontier technologies into inclusive education, aspiring breakthrough innovation from STEM to STEAM. It is an accumulation of 8 years in different types of work, project, and industry in the developing world and in European cities.

STEM is defined as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, which traditionally is viewed as the frontier areas of knowledge for innovation. STEAM is a more holistic approach to education, where the A stands for the Arts. Having a balanced education together with the advancement of technology, enabling creative expressions of complex knowledge empowers individuals and improves learning outcomes. The Key To Real Change

Often the “winner takes all” mentality dominates decision making in businesses. However, from an impact perspective and for projects to become fruition, we must cross collaborate. To bridge these gaps, it is vital to find the right balance in co-creating, building community, collaborating or the “three C’s” as Sally referred them.

To make greater impact, you need to encourage more exchange with people from different seniority and sectors which will provide better solutions and solve real pain points. Just like Sally shared, “You can’t go into something and prescribe what the solution is. You need to work with the local community and come together and make everybody’s voices heard.”

Collaboration and pushing traditional education will be the driving forces to close the digital gap. They are the defining elements to bring real sustainable change to the less fortunate in the digital age.
